In my opinion, a public person with a reputation, ratings and reviews will always cause more trust (all other things being equal). Why? Because he will value this reputation. Now any information is incredibly available, including negative information. There are tons of sites where you can leave feedback about a person or company with which you interacted. A competent specialist will try with all his might to prevent negative feedback about him: he spoils his reputation, relationships with other (current and future) clients, this will affect his future work and income.

First consultation and how to check the competence of a lawyer?
The second, and seemingly pretty obvious rule - believe your eyes. Agree with a lawyer about a consultation and be sure to pay for it (no matter how cynical it may sound). This is a very important point, since the only resource a lawyer has and sells is his time. He can't spend it for free, so if you've met a lawyer who looks competent, you need to build long-term relationships with each other. Building a relationship with a client who is unwilling or unwilling to pay is not very interesting (again, sorry for the cynicism).

If the person in front of you inspires confidence in the consultation process, this is already half the battle (well, not half the battle, but at least a quarter). If a person does not inspire confidence, then you definitely should not work with him.
